Still Missing Journalists

Michelle Malkin, to her much deserved credit, continues to draw attention to the two Fox News journalists, Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig, who remain missing after they were kidnapped at gunpoint in Gaza over a week ago.

Fox News Channel reporter Steve Centanni and freelance cameraman Olaf Wiig are still missing. It has now been more than a week since their kidnapping at gunpoint in Gaza by unknown terrorists. FNC top management, the journalists' families, and Palestinian journalists continue to press for their release.  She is providing a good list of sites still covering the incident, as the kidnapping has unfortunately received little play in the national press.

Following up on my post late Sunday night, some media types are now musing that one possible reason the story is not getting the attention it deserves is that there aren't any "new" developments to report. Vaughn Ververs, CJR Daily, and Stephen Spruiell at The Media Blog weigh in. TV blogs are covering the story: check TV Newser, Johnny Dollar, and Inside Cable News.

As horrific as tales of kidnappings go, this one is by far the oddest.  There has been no claims of responsibility, no calls for ransom, no reports whatsoever from the kidnappers.  It's well known the level of intimidation journalists face from terrorist groups, in an effort to hide things, bias the coverage or force favorable stories.  This often prompts news outlets to go to less than reputable stringers just to get news from the region, and afflicted with their own biases, sometimes it becomes all the more easy for journalists with an agenda or terrorist groups to get their story past the eyes of editors.  Witness the latest scandal of doctored photos at Reuters.

There have been some claims that the two are alive and unharmed.  But it seems that with this kidnapping, however, speculation is the order of the day.

Keep them in your prayers.
