Of course, it's the prime minister of Iraq who they've decided to target.
As he addressed our Congress today, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's looked out to see a chamber that was not full, because some Democrats decided to bitch at him and boycott.
Iraq's U.S.-backed government on Saturday denounced Israel's raids on Lebanon and Gaza. Maliki last week called for "the world to take quick stands to stop the Israeli aggression."
Senate Democratic leaders in a letter asked Maliki to clarify his remarks before addressing Congress. They said his failure to condemn Hizbollah's "aggression and recognize Israel's right to defend itself raise serious questions about whether Iraq under your leadership can play a constructive role in resolving the current crisis and bringing stability to the Middle East."
With more than 2,500 U.S. service members killed in the Iraq conflict, more than 18,000 wounded and more than $300 billion in U.S. tax dollars spent, the Senate Democrats said, "Americans deserve to know whether Iraq is an ally in these fights."
Apparently these jokers haven't yet heard the rantings of Kofi Annan, and the rest of the international community, all of who have taken great pains to avoid saying much of anything beyond "stop fighting!" Of course Kofi Annan today accused Israel, without proof, mind you, of deliberatly targeting U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon. You know, these peacekeepers. the ones who allowed Hezbollah to set up camp within spitting distance.
As Michelle noted, Jed Babbin commented on this arrangement some time ago.
The U.N. flag and the Hezbollah flag fly side by side. Observers told me the U.N. and Hezbollah personnel share water and telephones, and that the U.N. presence serves as a shield against Israeli strikes against the terrorists.
This is the same U.N. force, mind you, that was supposed to disarm Hezbollah after Israel withdrew from Lebanon. And so as the raging conflict demonstrates, they've made little to no progress.
With this as the backdrop, of course, the silence by Democrats on the issue of Kofi's accusation is all the more revealing.
But, lest you think that this was only about satiating their Bush hatred, Howard Dean blew away all doubt.
"The Iraqi prime minister is an anti-Semite," the Democratic leader told a gathering of business leaders in Florida. "We don't need to spend $200 and $300 and $500 billion bringing democracy to Iraq to turn it over to people who believe that Israel doesn't have a right to defend itself and who refuse to condemn Hezbollah."
On Tuesday, leading Senate Democrats said in a sharply worded letter that Al-Maliki's "failure to condemn Hezbollah's aggression and recognize Israel's right to defend itself raises serious questions about whether Iraq under your leadership can play a constructive role in resolving the current crisis and bringing stability to the Middle East."
So for all their fears that Bush would create an Iraq that cow-towed to U.S. demands, just a puppet of Karl Rove...apparently that's what Democrats wanted all along. The Prime Minister doesn't condemn someone, so they get mad and want to pick up their toys and go home. Really, there is a word for this, but we'll be nice and just call Howard a mentally challanged individual.
Perhaps though, if these fakers had but attended the speech Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki gave, they would have heard something a bit more striking.
Thank you for your continued resolve in helping us fight the terrorists plaguing Iraq, which is a struggle to defend our nation's democracy and our people who aspire to liberty, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. All of those are not Western values; they are universal values for humanity.
They are as much for me the pinnacle embodiment of my faith and religion, and they are for all free spirits.
The war on terror is a real war against those who wish to burn out the flame of freedom. And we are in this vanguard for defending the values of humanity.
I know that some of you here question whether Iraq is part of the war on terror. Let me be very clear: This is a battle between true Islam, for which a person's liberty and rights constitute essential cornerstones, and terrorism, which wraps itself in a fake Islamic cloak; in reality, waging a war on Islam and Muslims and values.
And spreads hatred between humanity, contrary to what come in our Koran, which says, "We have created you of male and female and made you tribes and families that you know each other." Surely (inaudible) of you in the sight of God is the best concept.
The truth is that terrorism has no religion. Our faith says that who kills an innocent, as if they have killed all mankind.
For all their pandering, not one Democrat could come up with a speech this spot on. And that's because the Iraqi's really do want their freedom, while Democrats really have no idea what they want - aside from a return to power of course.
More from the Prime Minister:
Iraq is free, and the terrorists cannot stand this.
They hope to undermine our democratically elected government through the random killing of civilians. They want to destroy Iraq's future by assassinating our leading scientific, political and community leaders. Above all, they wish to spread fear.
Do not think that this is an Iraqi problem. This terrorist front is a threat to every free country in the world and their citizens. What is at stake is nothing less than our freedom and liberty.
Confronting and dealing with this challenge is the responsibility of every liberal democracy that values its freedom. Iraq is the battle that will determine the war. If, in continued partnership, we have the strength of mind and commitment to defeat the terrorists and their ideology in Iraq, they will never be able to recover.
And that's the heart of it, that the terrorists will never be able to recover from a free and successful Iraq. And sadly it seems that Democrats haven't been able to recover from that thought either.
