An American doctor, in Canada apparently, has a "kooky" idea up his sleeve. Why not use Botox to treat clinical depression?
After all, if they can use injections to stop you from frowning, you'll be happy. Right?
Is it possible to Botox away major depression by immobilizing the forehead muscles that control frowning?
An American derma-surgeon who is trying to patent Botox as a treatment for depression reports that freezing the frown did appear to lighten the mood of nine of 10 clinically depressed patients he treated. Others remain unconvinced this small study proves a cosmetic procedure can alleviate such a complex and often difficult-to-treat condition.
The study was published this week in Dermatological Surgery, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.
That group's president-elect Dr. Alastair Carruthers, volunteered that on the face of it, the study appears "kooky."
But Carruthers - a Vancouver dermatologist who along with his wife, Jean, pioneered the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin - said the history of Botox is replete with examples of seemingly kooky applications that defy skeptics. (Carruthers has no financial stake in Allergan, which brought Botox to market.)
Doesn't the thought of a doctor injecting botulinum toxin into your face have you smiling already? It's a miracle drug, and part-time bio-weapon, after all...
